February, 2012
I gave a hundred Valentines.
A hundred, did I say?
I gave a thousand Valentines
one cold and wintry day.
I didn’t put my name on them
or any other words.
because my Valentines were seeds
for February birds.

February is National Children’s Dental Month so healthy bodies and good nutrition become our focus.  On Wednesday & Thursday,
February 1st & 2nd   Dental Hygienist, Mrs, Kelly Faulkner (Busy Bee Jared’s mom),  will present a lesson to our preschoolers on
tooth care & visiting the dentist.  Mrs. Faulkner will explain what dentists do to help keep our teeth healthy and why we should
brush, floss, eat nutritiously and even clean are tongues!  She will take a peek at our own “pearly whites” so don’t forget to brush
extra good those mornings!  These non-threatening introductions to dental hygiene allow our preschoolers to experience a dentist
without fear.  We hope this early exposure to tooth care will be the beginning of a healthy habit for life.

F is for FUN and that’s what February is all about!  Sparkly red hearts, lacy white doilies, lots of glitter, glue & Valentine wishes
from classrooms full of excited preschoolers.  To make sure no one is left out, please bring a Valentine card for each child in your
class.  Sign your child’s name on each card and then stand back and watch the delight as your preschooler experiences the giving and
receiving of so many cards that say “I LIKE YOU”!   Festive Valentine Parties will be on Monday, February 13th & Tuesday the
14th.  Sign up posters are in your classrooms.  Please do not include candy that contains peanut butter, peanuts or nuts because of
severe allergies or hard candy that our young children could choke on in your valentines.

Our 4 year olds also begin their most industrious project of the year  -  Body Pictures!  You will see bodies everywhere  -  draped
over easels, hanging from bulletin boards, laying under bookcases!  Once cut out (and that takes a lot of cutting for small hands) the
number of children in our classrooms seems to double.  I am always amazed at the likeness many of these self-portraits have to
their young artists.  See if you can match up our talented pairs?

We are so fortunate to have so many involved with our preschool program.  From our professional staff who live and breathe what’s
appropriate for young children; to our room mother’s who help out our teachers; to the board members who set policy & procedures
that keep our program running smoothly and soundly; and to all of you who donate time and resources to our nutrition program, our
curriculum, our fundraising and our transportation needs, this is what makes this preschool a great place for children as well as
adults.  We are proud that several of our preschooler’s parents & one grandparent this year were once preschoolers here themselves!

Just a reminder that the preschool will be closed Friday, February 17th for Lincoln’s Birthday and Monday, February 20th  for
Washington’s Birthday.

Happy Valentine’s Day,

Lee Ann Salmon

Valentine’s Day is a great way to celebrate a preschooler’s
                                     importance!
Building a sense of faith, trust and security in your preschooler began at birth when she cried and you picked her up, feed her or
changed that diaper.  She learned early on that she could trust you to meet her needs.  Having a special place that’s safe and happy,
somewhere to put their things and display their artwork gives young children feelings of stability and belonging.  It also tells them
that they are important.  Having people of all ages that care for them and encourage feelings of value and self-worth, playing with
other young children, being read stories, learning appropriate behavior and positive ways of working together, celebrating special
occasions like birthdays and holidays all encourage appreciation of others and a beginning awareness of the importance of each
individual.  All faith is built on the ability to trust and trusting comes much easier to a child that feels he or she is important to
someone.

Tired of Fixing Lunches?
How about “Pizza” For Lunch Bunch? Every Thursday and Friday beginning March 1st & 2nd until preschool is out in June we will
be offering “Pizza for Lunch Bunch”.   For an additional $2.00 ($6.00 for Lunch Bunch and $2.00 for Pizza) your child can buy 2
slices of Capone’s pizza (one cheese, one pepperoni), a glass of milk and a piece of fruit.  Please write “PIZZA” on the Lunch Bunch
column of the sign in/sign-out sheets.  The $6.00 Lunch Bunch fee, as well as the $2.00 pizza charge, can still be paid with the
following month’s tuition as usual.  Regular Lunch Bunch continues Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and children who
do not want pizza can continue to bring their own packed lunches.  Enjoy!

Due to some severe peanut allergies, please DO NOT bring peanuts or peanut
products to school in lunches, for parties or treats,  This includes Peanut Butter!  This is
extremely serious and we have found many tasty substitutes at Trader Joes & Clarke’s
Nutrition Center that we serve for snacktime (ie. sunbutter, sunflower butter, almond
butter, etc.)
