March, 2010

Thank you all for making our classroom parties for Valentine’s Day so much fun and very festive.  The children were overwhelmed with
the amount of cards and goodies they received.

March is Dr. Suess’s birthday, so we will be reading lots of his stories and eating Green Eggs & Ham for snack!  March is also
National Nutrition Month and it begins our lessons on the new food pyramid for preschoolers.  (Hopefully all the Valentine candy is
eaten with mom & dad’s help!)  Eat right, exercise & have fun!  Healthy teeth are an important part of a healthy body!  Many thanks to
Dr. Kavanagh and his Dental Office and to Dental Hygienist Angela Liao (Pooh Bear mom) for sharing their expertise.  Our
preschoolers were thrilled with the goodie bags & brand new toothbrushes! Many thanks to those of you whom safely drove our
precious cargo to their destination and back!

Besides learning how to keep teeth bright & sparkly clean, we had our eyes checked for Amblyopia by The Elk’s Vision Screening
Preschool Project. We played the “Pirate Game”, got to wear an eye patch and earned a sticker.  If you received a referral, please do
follow through with a check-up.  “Lazy Eye” caught before age five can be completely corrected.  We’ve also discovered that behavior
can improve dramatically when a child no longer has to struggle to see.  The Elk’s also collects old glasses, so if you have a pair bring
them to us and we will make sure they get recycled.

To better understand that all living things need attention, care and a healthy diet, we have had a visit from the “Lizard Wizard” &
learned about reptiles & spiders -  how they feel & what they like to eat!  As the weather warms up, we will be adding to our beautiful
winter garden that Tina Disney (Lucky Ladybug mom) has planted for us.  Pole beans, carrots, onions, tomatoes, strawberries, corn,
lettuce, radishes, sweet peas, sunflowers, marigolds and impatients are some of summer’s bounty.  In May we will harvest the
vegetables and build our own healthy salad bar for snack.  Our 4-year old classrooms & pre K will be heading to Stater Bros. Grocery
Store on Mary Street for a “behind the scenes” tour of stock rooms, refrigerator cases, freezers, bakery, meat department, box
compactor & loading dock.  All the fun places mom & dad never get to go!

Easter is April 4th this year followed by Spring Break, so our Easter Egg Hunts will be on Tuesday & Wednesday, March 30th & 31st
and classroom parties & parades will be Thursday & Friday, the 1st & 2nd of April.  We need plastic eggs and non-chocolate/non-
peanut items to fill the eggs.  Stickers, novelties, soft/chewable Easter candy like Peeps work best.

You may have noticed how many children seem to be hanging around our 4-year-old classrooms.  Preschoolers are everywhere. Body
pictures are one of our most industrious projects of our year.  Creating a life-size image of yourself provides a lot of learning
activities and language development.  Children build strength in small fingers and hands by painting and cutting, free artistic
expression is a positive emotional release, vocabulary increases when we compare and contrast size, weight, hair length and color, eye
color and clothing styles, affirmation of individual differences and group similarities becomes a great self-awareness and multi-
cultural activity and our self-concept and self-esteem is nourished, as well as, good nutrition and healthy habits are learned as we
discuss how much we have changed since we were born.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day  -  Go Green!
